Does a chunk of pine sap make decent bow rosin?

Is it possible to rosin a violin or cello bow with regular pine sap? I'm microwaving mine first, so i can put it in a mold. Has anyone tried pine sap as rosin? Is it rather effective? It's certainly cost efficient :)
